The  Mission

"...build bridges, nurture future leaders, and ensure that the values of service, equity, and unity remain central to our shared future."

At the heart of the Mayor Lizette P. Parker Foundation lies a steadfast commitment to uplifting, empowering, and celebrating the diverse communities of Bergen County and beyond. Inspired by the life and legacy of Mayor Lizette P. Parker—the first African-American woman to serve as mayor in Bergen County, New Jersey—our mission is to honor her trailblazing spirit by fostering leadership, advancing educational opportunities, and recognizing those who make a meaningful difference in their communities. Through scholarships, community programs, and signature events such as the African American History Month Breakfast, we strive to build bridges, nurture future leaders, and ensure that the values of service, equity, and unity remain central to our shared future.

The Purpose

"Empowerment, Recognition and Celebration"

The Mayor Lizette P. Parker Foundation exists to preserve and extend the legacy of a leader who dedicated her life to public service, social justice, and community empowerment. Our purpose is threefold:

Empowerment Through Education:
We provide scholarships and financial aid to students, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds, helping them pursue higher education and realize their full potential.

Recognition of Community Service: We honor individuals and organizations who embody Mayor Parker’s values—those who demonstrate exceptional commitment to service, leadership, and positive change within their communities.

Celebration of Heritage and Unity: Through events like the annual African American History Month Breakfast, we bring together people of all backgrounds to celebrate cultural heritage, foster dialogue, and inspire collective action for a more inclusive and equitable society.

By advancing these goals, the Foundation serves as a living tribute to Mayor Parker’s vision: a world where every individual is empowered to lead, serve, and thrive.

The Founding

"Honoring the memory by continuing the work of service and empowerment"

The Mayor Lizette P. Parker Foundation was established by family, friends, and community leaders who sought to honor her memory by continuing her work of service and empowerment. Officially incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2020, the Foundation is headquartered in Montvale, New Jersey, and operates with a small, dedicated team of volunteers and board members.

The Foundation’s early years were marked by a focus on scholarships, community recognition, and the organization of events that reflect Mayor Parker’s values. Its flagship program, the African American History Month Breakfast, has become a cornerstone event in Bergen County, drawing hundreds of attendees annually to celebrate Black history, honor local leaders, and foster community unity.

Despite its relatively modest size and resources, the Foundation has maintained a strong presence in the community, leveraging partnerships with local organizations, schools, and civic groups to maximize its impact. Its commitment to transparency and accountability is reflected in its tax filings and public records, and it continues to seek new ways to expand its reach and deepen its service.

About Mayor Lizette P. Parker

Lizette P. Parker was a trailblazing public servant, a compassionate social worker, and a beloved community leader whose legacy continues to inspire generations. In 2014, she made history as the first African American woman elected mayor of Teaneck, New Jersey, and one of the first Black women to lead a municipality in Bergen County. Her life was a testament to the power of service, resilience, and unwavering commitment to justice and equity.

Born in Harlem and raised in Teaneck, Lizette’s roots in the community ran deep. She graduated from Teaneck High School and went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Montclair State University, followed by a Master’s in Administrative Science from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Her academic journey reflected her passion for understanding people and building systems that uplift those in need.

Before entering public office, Lizette dedicated her career to social work, serving as a caseworker for Bergen County’s Department of Social Services. Her work focused on helping families navigate complex challenges with dignity and support — a calling that shaped her empathetic leadership style.

In 2006, Lizette was elected to the Teaneck Township Council, where she served with distinction for over a decade. Her colleagues recognized her integrity, vision, and collaborative spirit, electing her as mayor in 2014. As mayor, she championed diversity, youth empowerment, and inclusive community development, always striving to ensure every voice was heard.

Mayor Parker was known not only for her historic achievements but also for her warmth, grace, and tireless advocacy. She believed in building bridges — across generations, cultures, and communities — and her leadership reflected the best of Teaneck’s values.

Tragically, Mayor Parker passed away in 2016 at the age of 44, leaving behind a profound legacy of service and love. In her honor, the Mayor Lizette P. Parker Memorial Foundation was established to continue her work — empowering youth, supporting families, and fostering civic engagement in the spirit of her life’s mission.
